I hiked 30 miles total last week.
Two months from yesterday, I have to hike 30 miles in ONE DAY.
We finally hiked a portion of the route for the Super Hike this weekend. We began at Lock 12 Historic Area and then hopped on my favorite trail– The Mason Dixon Trail! This time, however, we did not walk on paved roads through neighborhoods. Thankfully.
We hiked north from Lock 12, following the blue blazes, and almost immediately encountered some scenic views of the Susquehanna River and some tough elevation. Tough enough to make me rethink this whole Super Hike idea.
Despite the hills, the scenery was beautiful. We followed multiple creeks that ran into the river, which were perfect for the dogs to cool off and get some water. If we had been here a month ago, we could have enjoyed hiking through forests of mountain laurel in full bloom.
We hiked in five miles and then hiked back to the car. There isn’t a way to do a loop here, that we could find anyway. Lock 12 will be the second checkpoint on the Super Hike, meaning it will be about 16 miles into our hike.
I was excited to get home and look up the elevation of the climb we just did– maybe we climbed one of the toughest elevation spots on the Super Hike.
Nope. Not even close. We climbed to about 500 feet above sea level, and the highest point on the Super Hike will be closer to 1,000. On the other side of the river, the climbs won’t be quite as high, but they will be steeper.
So basically, we’ve got our work cut out for us.
