Fridays Are For… Christmas Cookies!

I’m feeling festive! We are headed to a cookie swap tonight, so I figured I would do a little online cookie-swapping today to get in the mood.

These are my all-time favorite Christmas cookies. My aunt gave me The Joy of Cooking years ago as a Christmas gift, and inside the back flap she inscribed this recipe. I assumed that it was a family recipe, but when I asked my mom who Mary was, she didn’t know. So that’s the end of that story. Whoever it was, she knew what was up.

There weren’t any instructions about mixing and sifting and what-not. I assume you mix the wet ingredients first and then add the dry ingredients, but I have been known to toss it all in a mixer at once, and it turns out just fine. Also: I think the special ingredient here is the cream of tartar. As soon as I opened the sealed jar and smelled the creamy tartary-ness, I immediately craved these cookies. Delicious.

Mary’s Sugar Cookies
1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 cup butter
1 egg
1 t. vanilla
1/2 t. almond extract
2 1/2 cups flour
1 t. soda
1 t. cream of tartar

Refridgerate for 2-3 hours.
Bake at 375 for 7-8 minutes on a greased cookie sheet.

2 cups powdered sugar
2 T. melted butter
1 t. vanilla
enough water or cream to make it thin (about 4 T.)

And then devour. I usually can’t even wait until the frosting has dried.
(These are the Minnesota version, thank to Kaitlin!)

I will be swapping cookies today LoveFeast Table and Leanne Penny. Enjoy!
